Peacock & Pony

ABOUT

The Peacock & Pony is a small family-operated farm two miles outside the hamlet of Natural Bridge, along the headwaters of the Indian River in northern Lewis County, NY. We grow birds, vegetables, and gourmet mushrooms and manage a forest where we forage and cultivate medicinal and nutritional products.

We raise pastured poultry (chickens and turkeys), game birds (pheasant and quail), and, of course, peafowl. We produce chicken and quail eggs and grow a wide variety of vegetables and gourmet mushrooms.

We also manage and co-exist with the extensive wetlands and old-growth forest that comprise the majority of the property. We cultivate and forage a number of forest products, including, woods cultivated mushrooms (shiitake, oyster, lion's mane), wild foraged mushrooms (chicken-of-the-woods, oyster, chanterelle, hedgehog), ginseng, and chaga.

The Peacock & Pony team also stewards the beloved Baker Woods Preserve, an extensive, public access forest and wetlands situated between our farm and the vast Jadwin State Forest.

OUR FARM & FOREST

Our farm and forest management depends on regenerative practices and minimal inputs, with the intention of building soil, ensuring clean water, promoting a healthy, ecologically rich old-growth forest, and producing healthful, natural, and responsible food.

OUR CREW

Matt and Linda Carney moved to Natural Bridge in 1986 and raised their family. In 2020, son Liam, with support from Matt and Linda, began working toward establishing this small farm enterprise on the property. Our team is bolstered immeasurably by the rest of the family: Siobhan Carney-Nesbitt, Lee Nesbitt, Maebh Nesbitt, Sinead Carney, Anthony Demetri, Joana Vaz de Sousa, Xavier Vaz Carney, and Dublin and Yeats.
